I blog for the
Huffington Post
about culture, politics, environmental issues,
and Brazil (my second country).
My novel
The Big God Network is a near-future science fiction story set in
Tokyo, Bali, Brazil and "post-America." It explores virtual reality,
cosmology, and global culture, and satirizes televangelists and the Christian
right.
I also write about Brazilian music and co-authored the book
The Brazilian Sound: Samba, Bossa Nova
& the Popular Music of Brazil (Temple University
Press), which is now nearing its 3rd U.S. edition, and has been translated into
French, German and Japanese versions.
In the past, I penned articles about culture, the arts, and ecology for the
Los Angeles Times, Pulse!, Musician, and the L.A. Reader, among other
publications. I was a longtime contributor to Billboard, where my Laser Scans
column ran from 1989 to 1996. I was Billboard's first writer to extensively
cover world music and digital media. During that time, I wrote Entertainment in
the Cyber Zone: Exploring the Interactive Universe of Multimedia (Random
House).
